JORGE CAINAS ART
Meteorites, dinosaur bones, Woolly Mammoth fur, 2,000-year-old Roman coins, and bullets from the American Civil War can all be found in my mixed media sculptures. I combine these rare and unusual materials alongside common ones like paperclips, matchsticks, spices, and dried flowers. I bind them together using concrete, ceramics, resin, metal, wire, and paint. I’ve been making my unique style of mixed-media sculpture for 12 years.
When I first became interested in sculpture I wanted to make something I had never seen before. I started with a lot of research. Eventually, my fascination with the natural world and the limited tools I had available led me to create floral arrangements using copper wire and minerals. This sculptural style became my main vehicle of expression, often titling my pieces with original poems. Since these first sculptures, I have evolved to incorporate many new techniques, design styles, materials, and processes.
Many of the themes repeated in my work are related to science, nature, and the human experience. The use and placement of materials in combination with the titles express my meaning.
