All Fairs are produced and curated in-house by our talented staff. We’re a friendly and creative group who have a love for all things independently designed and handmade.
Half of the Renegade Team works out of our headquarters in Chicago, while the rest are scattered throughout the U.S.Keep an eye out for us at the Fairs!
In 2003, two childhood friends, both Makers, were seeking out a way to show and sell their craftwork. Living in Chicago at the time, the existing markets and events didn’t feel like the right fit for their aesthetic, or for the work they were seeing from the emerging community of DIY Makers who were busy redefining what handmade craft and entrepreneurship looked like. The internet was young, without social media or websites stocked with handmade goods, and no other modern craft market existed to highlight the new and energetic craft community. Renegade Craft rose to fill this niche and helped pioneer this creative movement forward.
Founded by Makers for Makers, Renegade began as a 1-day Fair in Chicago’s Wicker Park. The Fair was a huge success for the 75 participating artists and resonated so positively with neighborhood residents that a decision was made to return in 2004, this time for 2 days. That same year on a trip to New York, one of the founders walked through Brooklyn’s McCarren Park in Williamsburg and had an idea which, one year later, would become Renegade Brooklyn.
In 2007, the founders went their separate ways, and Susie Daly continued to champion the Renegade path forward. With the support of her husband, Mat Daly, and an incredible group of inspired, passionate, and creative teammates and collaborators over the years – Renegade Craft now creates events in 12 cities, and produces 25+ Fairs and Pop-Ups annually. Renegade has become the leading voice of the independent contemporary craft community, and can be seen in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, London, Austin, Seattle, Portland, Denver, Boston, Detroit, and Miami.
We go to great lengths to find interesting locations and like-minded local partners in the cities Renegade visits in order to create unique, memorable experiences for both Makers and attendees alike. Each Fair each has its own character, featuring local and national artists, highlighting the neighborhoods and communities we’re in, and offering an experience that is supportive and inspiring.
Today in 2019, Renegade’s vision and approach is still very much embedded in its grassroots origins – from development, creative direction, event production, customer relations, marketing, to operations, it’s a living/breathing collaboration and we’re always striving to make Renegade the best experience as can be for our participants and attendees – while keeping it accessible and inclusive to all.
